Length of Navy Basic Training
Navy Basic Training is approximately eight weeks long, divided into three phases. Each phase is designed to build upon the previous one, gradually increasing the difficulty and intensity of the training.
- Phase 1: Red Phase (Weeks 1-2)
- Phase 2: White Phase (Weeks 3-4)
- Phase 3: Blue Phase (Weeks 5-8)
Phase 1: Red Phase (Weeks 1-2)
The Red Phase is the initial stage of Navy Basic Training, where you’ll be introduced to the basics of Navy life, including:
- Receiving: You’ll receive your initial medical screening, get issued your uniforms, and begin to learn the basics of Navy protocol.
- Seaman Recruit Training: You’ll start to learn the fundamental skills of a sailor, including knot-tying, sail repair, and basic first aid.
- Fitness Assessment: You’ll participate in a fitness assessment to evaluate your physical fitness level.
👊 Note: During the Red Phase, you'll be introduced to the concept of " attention to detail." This means that every aspect of your behavior, from your uniform to your haircut, will be scrutinized to ensure you meet Navy standards.
Phase 2: White Phase (Weeks 3-4)
The White Phase builds upon the foundation established in the Red Phase, with a focus on:
- Swimming and Water Survival: You’ll learn basic swimming strokes and water survival techniques.
- Damage Control: You’ll learn how to respond to emergencies on a ship, including firefighting and damage control procedures.
- Navy Core Values: You’ll learn about the Navy’s core values, including honor, courage, and commitment.
💡 Note: During the White Phase, you'll start to learn about the different types of ships and aircraft in the Navy, as well as the various ratings (jobs) available.
Phase 3: Blue Phase (Weeks 5-8)
The Blue Phase is the final stage of Navy Basic Training, where you’ll refine your skills and prepare for life as a sailor. You’ll:
- Practice Combat Skills: You’ll participate in simulated combat scenarios, learning how to respond to emergencies and protect yourself and your shipmates.
- Take the Final Exam: You’ll take a comprehensive exam to test your knowledge of Navy procedures, protocols, and core values.
- Graduation: You’ll participate in a graduation ceremony, marking the completion of Navy Basic Training.

- Mentorship: You’ll be assigned a mentor, known as a “RDC” (Recruit Division Commander), who will guide and support you throughout the training process.
